Culture Day
With an array of enticing exhibitions and architecture on our doorstep, we felt the significance of carving out time to feel inspired, creatively growing individually and as a team – and so we introduced out monthly Culture Day. Each month we scribble everyone’s name down and pick one out of a hat (all very official), to nominate someone on the team to plan an afternoon of culture. We wanted to share our inspirational outings with you here, from traditional Japanese woodworking techniques to immersive digital technology and one of London's greatest examples of Modernist architecture. We've also included an unofficial culture day that became such a historic event, it felt only right to remember it here too.
Graffiti tour of east London
For our latest excursion, maker Simon organised a different look at our own neighbourhood with a fascinating tour of street art across east London.
Isokon | Lawn Road Flats
The Isokon Building was designed and developed between 1929–1932 by the design firm of the same name, founded by Jack & Molly Pritchard in conjunction with architect Wells Coates. It was the first Modernist block of flats in Britain, pioneering the idea of minimalist, stylish city living. The compact ‘minimum flats’ occupy only 24m², while its restaurant, the Isobar, provided a social hub for artists and intellectuals. We were lucky enough to visit the Pritchard’s one-bedroom penthouse flat that is now owned and cared for by Cubitts founder, Tom Broughton. It was an honour to see such a beautiful example of Modern Movement architecture up close; to then notice a Lozi Modular Storage unit within the flat was a proud moment for the team that capped the visit off.
